Kang and Wei hated studying, didn't follow the rules, and couldn't adapt to the school within the system, so they transferred to the mountains. They don't go to class, sleep until they wake up naturally every day, and use various methods to punish people alongside each other, including: riding down the mountain on the teacher's motorcycle, setting fire to the school, or stealing a safe and burying it in the soil. Sometimes they guessed that they seemed to have been released. When they were promoted to the second year of junior high school, they became friends with Cai. Cai was an old carpenter from Lukang and a carpentry teacher on campus. After graduating from junior high school, Cai traveled around. He used to run boats, kill chickens, and finally became a craftsman. Before entering elementary school, he was full of curiosity about the world, asking if the sky is so high, is there anything blocking it in the end? Is the thing blocking it thick? If it's thick, what's behind it? Ten years ago, he wandered to the school on the mountain, and the wood factory gradually became a gathering place for rebel boys. They didn't study and had nowhere to go, so they had to stay in the wood factory all day. Ah Cai often talked with the boys all night long, they thought about philosophical questions that they couldn't figure out, and they didn't know why every answer was wrong. In the dark night, only the fire is left in the wood factory. No one knows where the future is. Dizzy, gossiping at night and buzzing with insects, at the end of their youth, they will finally part. Is there anything blocking the sky in the end? Is the thing blocking it thick? If it's thick, what's behind it?

Kang et Wei détestaient étudier, ne suivaient pas les règles et ne pouvaient pas s'adapter à l'école, alors ils ont du changer l’école et sont venus étudier dans la montagne, dans une école libre. Ils ne vont jamais au cours, dorment jusqu'à ce qu'ils se réveillent naturellement tous les jours, et commence à faire des espiègleries tout le temps, notamment : partir dans la ville en volant le scooter de professeurs, mettre le feu à l'école ou voler un coffre-fort depuis du bureau administratif en l'enterrant dans le sol. Parfois, ils se sentaient si sauvage qu’ils devinaient semblable a des enfants abandonnés par leurs parents. Lorsqu'ils ont été en deuxième année de lycée, ils se sont liés d'amitié avec Cai. Cai était un ancien charpentier d’un petit village Lukang, et le professeur de menuiserie sur le campus. Après avoir obtenu son diplôme du collège à l’âge de 15 ans, Cai a commencé son voyage. Il a été le marin, puis boucher et enfin il est devenu charpentier. Avant d'entrer à l'école primaire, il était à la base un enfant qui vit avec plein de curiosité dans sa tête pour ce monde, se demandant si le ciel est si haut, y a-t-il quelque chose qui le bloque à la fin ? Est-ce que la chose qui le bloque est épaisse ? Si elle est épaisse, qu'est-ce qu'il y en a derrière ? Il y a dix ans, il a erré jusqu'à cette école de la montagne, après avoir installé son usine de menuiserie devenant progressivement un lieu de rassemblement pour les garçons. Ils n'étudiaient pas et n'avaient nulle part où aller, alors ils restaient dans l'usine toute la journée, parlant avec Ah Cai jour et nuit, ils se posent des questions philosophiques qu'ils ne pouvaient pas comprendre, et ils ne savaient pas pourquoi chaque réponse était fausse. Dans toutes les nuits noire, restant que le feu dans l'usine, personne ne sait où il va, bavardant toute les nuits, bombarde par le son des insectes, puis, à la fin, ils vont enfin rentrer chez eux, se séparant.

小康和大為討厭念書，不遵守規矩，無法適應體制內學校因此轉學到山上來。他們不上課，每天睡到自然醒，和夥伴用各種方式整人，包含：幹老師的機車騎下山、在學校放火或偷保險箱埋入土中。有時候他們猜想自己似乎早已被放生。 升國二的時候，他們和阿財成為朋友，阿財是來自鹿港的老木匠，也是校園裡的木工老師，國中畢業後，阿財四處遊走，曾經跑船、殺雞，最後成為工匠。上小學前，他就對世界充滿好奇，追問天那麼高，最後有沒有東西擋住？擋住的那塊東西厚嗎？很厚的話，後面是甚麼？十年前他流浪到山上的學校，木工廠漸漸成了叛逆男孩們的聚集地，他們不讀書，沒有地方去，只好整天待在木工廠。 阿財時常和男孩們徹夜長談，他們漫不經心地想著想不通的哲學問題，不知道為什麼每個答案都是錯的。夜裡昏暗，木工廠只留下火，沒人知道未來在哪，頭昏腦脹，夜晚閒聊蟲鳴不已，青春的盡頭，他們終要分別。
